How Much Should You Budget for a Wedding DJ in Austin?

What share of your wedding budget to set aside, three sample DJ budgets and the add-ons Austin couples often forget to plan for.

Wedding guests dancing at a Central Texas reception with DJ Lady T

Figuring out how much to budget for a wedding DJ in Austin is easier when you start with your total budget instead of a random number. Your DJ and MC run the flow of your whole reception, so the goal isn't to spend the most or the least. It's to fund the experience you actually want and leave room for the details that make it feel like yours.

We're Urban Opulence Entertainment, a bilingual DJ and MC company based in Lockhart, just south of Austin, led by DJ Lady T. If you want national averages and a breakdown of what drives DJ pricing, start with our general guide, How Much Does a Wedding DJ Cost? This post is about planning your number.

What Austin weddings cost

According to The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed couples married in 2025:

  • The national average wedding cost was $34,200, with an average of 117 guests.
  • The Texas average was $31,000.
  • The Austin average was $37,000, above both the state and national figures.

The same study found that weddings in July through September averaged $35,400 nationally, the highest of any season, followed by April through June at $34,300. Timing affects your whole budget, not just your DJ.

What share of your wedding budget goes to the DJ

WeddingWire's budget breakdown, based on spending reported by 10,474 recently married couples, shows that couples put about 6% of their budget toward the DJ and live band on average. For comparison, venue and rentals averaged 29% and catering, dessert and alcohol averaged 24%.

Here's what 6% looks like at a few total budgets:

  • $20,000 wedding: about $1,200
  • $30,000 wedding: about $1,800
  • $37,000 wedding (the Austin average): about $2,220
  • $50,000 wedding: about $3,000

Treat this as a starting point. If dancing is the heart of your wedding, it's common to move money from somewhere else and give entertainment a bigger slice.

Add-ons to plan for

Couples often set a DJ number and then discover the extras they really want. Build these into your budget from the start:

  • Ceremony audio. Outdoor ceremonies at Hill Country and ranch venues need their own speakers and wireless mics so vows can be heard.
  • Cocktail hour music. If your cocktail hour is in a separate space, it may need a second sound setup.
  • Uplighting. Room uplighting matched to your colors transforms a venue after sunset. See our wedding lighting guide.
  • Cold sparks, haze or a disco ball. Great for a grand entrance or first dance. Always confirm what your venue allows.
  • Extra hours. If your timeline runs long, ask about overtime pricing before the day.
  • Travel. We include free travel within 30 miles of Lockhart. Ask about your venue's distance when you request a quote.

Where to save and where to splurge

Smart places to save:

  • Choose reception-only coverage if your ceremony venue provides sound.
  • Pick one signature effect instead of several.
  • Consider a Friday, Sunday or off-season date.
  • Keep the ceremony and reception at the same location to avoid a second setup.

Worth the splurge:

  • An experienced MC. Introductions, toasts and the timeline depend on it.
  • Ceremony sound. Your guests came to hear your vows.
  • Lighting. It changes how the room feels and how your photos and video look.
  • Bilingual hosting. If your families speak English and Spanish, everyone should feel welcomed. DJ Lady T hosts in both.

Book early for peak season in Austin

Spring and fall are the favorite seasons for Central Texas weddings, when evenings are milder than our long summers. Nationally, The Knot notes that the most popular wedding dates are usually Saturdays in October, September or June, and its list of top 2026 dates included September 19, September 26 and October 10. If you're planning a spring or fall Saturday in Austin, Dripping Springs, San Marcos or New Braunfels, lock in your DJ as soon as your venue is booked.

Let's build your number together

A smart DJ budget starts with your total budget, your priorities and your venue. Once we know those, we can show you exactly which package fits and which add-ons are worth it. Read more on our Austin wedding DJ cost guide or our Austin wedding DJ page.
