Meet DJ Lady T: From Drums & Saxophone to Central Texas's Bilingual DJ

Some DJs discover music through a turntable. For Tiara Hicks, known to her clients as DJ Lady T, it started much earlier, with a pair of drumsticks.

A lifelong musician from Luling, Texas

Tiara grew up in Luling, Texas, and music has been part of her life for as long as she can remember. She started with drums, then moved to clarinet, then saxophone. Each instrument taught her something different: the drums gave her a feel for rhythm and timing, and the woodwinds taught her melody, phrasing and listening to the players around her.

That foundation eventually led her to DJing and MC work, and to founding Urban Opulence Entertainment.

How a musician's ear shapes the dance floor

That musical background shows up in how DJ Lady T runs an event:

• Listening closely. Before choosing the next song, she's watching how the room responds to the current one.
• Reading the room. She starts with songs that bring every age onto the dance floor, then builds to high-energy tracks once the room is ready.
• Smooth transitions. A drummer's sense of timing makes for mixes that keep people moving instead of heading back to their seats.
• Using the mic with purpose. She picks up the microphone when it helps the crowd participate, not to fill silence.

Bilingual and all-genre

DJ Lady T is a bilingual DJ and MC, hosting in English, Spanish or both. That matters at weddings where families speak different languages and at quinceañeras where abuelos and teenagers share the dance floor. She's also an all-genre DJ, blending timeless favorites, current hits, cumbia, bachata, reggaetón, hip-hop, pop and country so the soundtrack feels like the client, not a generic radio playlist. A nurse's care, behind the booth

Outside of events, Tiara is also a nurse, and caring for people is naturally part of who she is. That same calm, attentive mindset shows up in her client communication and event planning: she listens, prepares, communicates and stays tuned in to what clients and their guests need throughout the celebration.
